Dr. Benson is an Affiliate Faculty in the Program in Bioethics and Humanities and Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She completed her MD, PhD in Immunology, pediatric residency, and chief residency at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Benson completed a Pediatric Bioethics Certificate Program at the Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO.  She is board certified in hospice and palliative medicine in addition to pediatrics.

Dr. Benson is the Medical Director of the Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Program and practices inpatient and outpatient palliative care. She is the Director of the Ethics Consult Service and Co-Chair of the Ethics Working Group at University of Iowa Health Care. Dr. Benson is involved in all levels of ethics education at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and leads the planning committees for Schwartz Rounds and Ethics Rounds. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and was elected to the Executive Committee of the Section on Bioethics.  Her research interests include the impact of palliative care and ethics consultation on clinicians and patients and their families.
